Lessons from Dicey Langston Springfield on How to Be a True Patriot in a Divided Society
There are intriguing parallels between our day and the days of the American Revolution. The American Revolution was almost a civil war within a revolution because there was a great division between those who supported the patriot cause and those who remained loyal to the British. This included looting and treating people cruelly who were in the opposing party. In Laurens District, South Carolina, most of the people were Tories (for the British), so my 4th Great Grandmother and her family were the minority as supporters of the patriot cause.
I gave this presentation at Traveler’s Rest, SC City Hall on November 2, 2023, to present on the legacy of Dicey Langston Springfield, a Revolutionary War heroine who was a spy carrying messages to the patriots. There are some valuable lessons we can learn from Dicey about living in a divided society.
The event also featured artist Nick Ring who is creating a life-size monument of Dicey Langston to go in downtown Traveler’s Rest. Currently the city is raising money for the monument.
